Pathology Services
Staffed by expert pathologists, Stamford Hospital's Department of Pathology remains at the forefront in the battle against breast and other cancers.
In addition to reviewing every breast cancer case weekly, we also formally review all core biopsies performed at Stamford Hospital through an interdisciplinary weekly conference that includes our radiologists, pathologists and surgeons.
The Department of Pathology supports the Women's Breast Center through:
Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Service
Our breast cytopathologist, who specializes in performing fine needle aspiration biopsies of breast lesions, sees patients daily in conjunction with breast surgeons and radiologists.
Expert Surgical Pathology
Our team of experienced breast pathologists helps to evaluate breast lesions. They work closely with breast radiologists and surgeons to assure the best possible outcomes for our patients both in terms of diagnosis and surgery.
Tumor/Prognosis Markers
We also provide breast cancer patients and their physicians with special studies that determine whether the tumor cells have hormone receptors or express Her-2 Neu, a genetic product which can enable the patient to receive a special type of chemotherapy.
Consultation Services
Patients diagnosed with breast cancer or breast abnormalities and who come to the Women's Breast Center for a second opinion can have their pathology reviewed at the time of their visit. This is done in conjunction with the surgeon so that the best therapeutic and diagnostic decisions can be made.
